Ford Government Plans Unprecedented Privatization of For-Profit Health Care: Health Coalitions Across Province Hold Summits to Fight Privatization and Protect Public Health Services

TORONTO, March 14, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —

What:
The Ford government is embarking on an unprecedented privatization of health care. Recently, Health Minister Christine Elliott announced plans to expand private for-profit clinics and hospitals in Ontario. The Ford government is halfway through awarding more than 18,000 long-term care beds to for-profit corporations under 30-year contracts, unless we stop them; the majority going to the same companies responsible for thousands of deaths and horrific conditions – in fact the highest death rates – in the pandemic. Despite numerous repeated announcements, Ford has not restored full inspections or improved levels of care in long-term care, solved the staffing crisis in health care, and has plans for years to come. budgetary austerity after the elections. It doesn’t stop there. Ford privatizes the last remaining public portions of home care. His government has strictly restricted access to public COVID testing while hiring for-profit clinics to perform testing, has privatized COVID vaccinations, and is allowing these private, for-profit testing clinics to charge patients up to $400 for COVID testing.

Health coalitions across Ontario are holding emergency summits across Ontario by Zoom to stage the biggest response we’ve ever staged. Our goal is to protect and improve our vital public health services and end the unprecedented privatization of for-profit health care. The Ontario Health Coalition, a nonpartisan public health care watchdog, intends to make the threat to our public health care a key election issue and lobby everything political parties to commit to protecting public health care, stopping privatization, and addressing urgent needs for improved care and staffing.

We expect large crowds at every emergency summit. Media are welcome.
